Researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine compared cases of classic heart attacks and stress cardiomyopathy. The clinical features of the cardiomyopathy were different from the classic heart attacks. Most of them were middle aged to elderly women who were in good health and had few risk factors for heart disease. Their arteries were not blocked and their blood did not test with high levels of enzymes normally released from damaged heart muscle. They found recovery rates were much faster than typically seen after a heart attack. Their hearts were able to pump within a few days. They had complete recovery within two weeks. Recovery after a heart attack can take weeks or months. Often the heart muscle damage is permanent.

Life events that can trigger stress cardiomyopathy can be as common as a car accident, a court appearance, shocking news, sudden loss of a loved one, or sudden intense fear. The syndrome is stress induced. Stress cardiomyopathy is not as common as a typical heart attack, but it is now recognized as a real event.

Once again, we see how stress affects our health. When Fear overloads our body, our health is affected. Stress makes us sick. Anxiety makes us sick. Stress and anxiety are the result of Fear working in us. Many, if not most, of our diseases have a spiritual root of fear, stress and anxiety. A medical doctor who has authored many books states he thinks 75% to 90% of all disease can be linked to stress. The scriptures say in the last days "men's hearts will fail them for fear".

We have to choose whether we are people of faith of people of fear. People of fear expect trouble to overtake them and the fear that demands to be fulfilled torments them. People of faith choose to trust God is working in their life and if trouble should come, they trust God will enable them to overcome the trouble. Fear does not torment them for their faith demands to be fulfilled, faith that God will make a way where there seems to be no way.

Our research indicates more studies are being conducted to gather additional information concerning the broken heart syndrome and we will follow it closely. Once again this information will serve as a double edged sword; to some it will generate much hope and encouragement that true healing can come and to others it could motivate changes of an unhealthy attitude promoting fear, stress and anxiety that is often linked to disease.
