People have always talked about broken hearts. Songwriters have written about broken hearts in countless songs. But not many people have taken the issue of a broken heart very seriously. At Be in Healthâ„¢, we take broken hearts very seriously. We have seen broken hearts can be linked to disease. We have seen many lives destroyed from a broken heart left with no hope. We know that with God there is always hope. We have seen the results of broken hearts healed. God heals broken hearts.
But I want to tell you about something very interesting that has been happening in the medical community. Studies are showing sudden emotional shock can cause heart failure. Shocking news can cause catastrophic events, like a heart attack. Researchers have discovered emotional shock can mimic a classic heart attack. Heart failure from emotional shock results in muscle weakness of the heart. The good news is, it is reversible.
Researchers call this event, stress cardiomyopathy. It is also called the broken heart syndrome. Often misdiagnosed as a massive heart attack, the reality is it is the result of a long surge of adrenaline and noradrenaline (epinephrine and norepinephrine) that temporarily stun the heart muscle. It does not cause permanent heart damage. These hormones dump into the bloodstream with their breakdown products and associated proteins produced by an over excited nervous system. The overload of these chemicals becomes toxic to the heart. The toxic effect on the heart produces symptoms of chest pain, fluid in the lungs, shortness of breath and heart failure.
