From the standpoint of the sanctification issue, Paul says in 2 Corinthians 7:1 (this is a tough scripture on this subject) "Having therefore these promises dearly beloved," (obviously addressed to believers) "let us cleanse ourselves therefore from all filthiness of the flesh and the spirit."

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

That's addressed by a New Testament apostle to a New Testament church and it talks about cleansing the human spirit.

In Proverbs, there's another scripture that says, "A man who has no rule over his own spirit is like a city with its walls broken down and all manner of beasts just come in and out. "

Proverbs 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Do we realize there really is a spiritual kingdom of principalities and powers, spiritual wickedness in high places and rulers of the darkness of this world that answers to Satan? Do we realize we can cleanse ourselves of the effects of its "beasts" sent to "break down our walls?"

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Paul indicated our body needs sanctification, our soul needs sanctification and our spirit needs sanctification.
